AUSTIN, Texas (May 20, 2021) – TPC Racing opens its second season of IMSA Lamborghini Super Trofeo competition this weekend at Circuit of the Americas (COTA) in Austin, Texas, with Scott Schmidt and Trevor Andrusko returning to co-drive the No. 38 Lamborghini Sterling/Erin Levitas Foundation Lamborghini Huracan Super Trofeo Evo in the Am class. The season opener is run in conjunction with the NASCAR’s inaugural appearance at the track, May 21-23.
TPC Racing got a head start on the season with a test on the 3.4-mile circuit, followed by Schmidt’s debut in GT America driving the same Huracan he’ll campaign in the Super Trofeo championship.
“Our TPC Racing/Lamborghini Sterling Super Trofeo car was absolutely wonderful,” “I’m looking forward to opening up the Lamborghini Super Trofeo series here in Austin at the world-famous F1 track,” Schmidt said. “There’s a large crowd anticipated, and I’m hoping this means racing is back alive again.”
The first 50-minute race of the weekend goes green on Saturday, May 22 at 6 p.m. CDT while the second and final sprint of the weekend is scheduled to start at 11:10 a.m. CDT on Sunday, May 23. The Sunday Lamborghini finale is the lead-in race for the COTA weekend’s featured NASCAR Cup Series Echo Park Texas Grand Prix. Both races will stream live on Lamborghini.com. A weekend recap airs at 2 p.m. ET Wednesday, June 2 on NBCSN.
“Being there on NASCAR weekend is going to raise awareness for the whole road course racing thing, which is awesome,” Andrusko said. “It’s cool that we’re there as the support series, that’s really neat. The track is a lot bumpier now than it used to be, so that’s made us search on the setup a little harder. It’s a really cool track and we’re excited to be there. It’s going to be a really fast race, as long as we stay under green.”
The weather forecast is calling for a high chance of rain on all three days, but Schmidt got a feel for that in his GT Americas race – also run in the wet.
“For the first time in my life I was comfortable in the rain,” Schmidt said. “The car was set up, the coaching, the prep – we got out there and the track became predictable in the rain. You could push corners and slide and at that point, every time you came through that same corner, you could expect it.”
The opener for the Lamborghini Super Trofeo season is a continuation of a busy 2021 already underway for TPC Racing, who is also competing in Porsche Carrera Cup North America and Porsche Sprint Challenge North America this season.
“We’re definitely ready to get Scott back behind the wheel and really measure the progress he’s already made,” Harris Levitas, TPC Racing Director of Race Operations, said. “He and Trevor have worked really hard in the off season, and even though it seems the Am class has gotten even more competitive this year, I think that work is going to pay off for them. We’re really thankful to the team at Lamborghini Squadra Corse for putting together such a spectacular series that is attracting a record entry this weekend. It’s going to be great!”
The weekend opens with a pair of afternoon practice on Friday, May 21. The schedule for Saturday, May 22, begins bright and early at 7 a.m. CDT with two rounds of qualifying to set the grids for the weekend’s races at 6 p.m. CDT on Saturday and 11:10 a.m. CDT on Sunday, May 23.
